What is Provato?

Provato is 2 things:
  • A messaging layer for J2EE application servers. It makes SMS and MMS application development much easier, particularly applications that run in industry standard J2EE environments such as BEA Weblogic and IBM Websphere, as well as free app servers such as JBoss.
  • A stand alone message server (shipped with JBoss) providing SOAP interfaces for non-java applications, such as those developed in .NET. Provato can run as an NT service or on a Linux server machine.
Java and Provato can be used to develop carrier-grade applications such as highly available value added service applications for mobile network operator. Provato runs in failover mode and in a clustered environment.

Provato and .NET can be used to develop desktop and server applications in Microsoft enterprise environments. Applications can communicate with the Provato server over SOAP/XML which integrates very closely with .NET development.

Provato guarantees message delivery. Provato manages the interfaces to the cellular network and persists messages until they have been delivered to the end user's mobile phone - i.e. mobile terminated or MT messages. The same applies to mobile originated messages destined for applications. If the application is not, Provato will cache the message until it is ready to accept messages.

Provato routes messages between multiple applications and multiple mobile network interfaces. Routing is based on properties of the message such as source and destination number, text content or keywords, last originating application or mobile interface (for routing responses).
