What are cellular modems/terminals, which models are supported, and where are they sourced?
Messaging software - including NCL's SwiftNote and Provato - can send mobile messages over cellular terminals or modems as well as via message centre connections. A cellular terminal is typically a device connected to a computer via the RS232 or serial port. A SIM card is inserted in the device and an antannae attached. Effectively it is a blackbox containing the engine of a mobile phone.
Cellular terminals are suitable for low volume messaging. Typical throughput on a single device is 1 message every 4 to 6 seconds. Higher throughput can be achieved by adding more terminals to a configuration. Cellular terminals are typically more reliable for sending messages than a handset attached in the same manner. The protocol to interface with terminals and phones is the same, however implementations vary from this specification.
What modems do NCL support?
NCL support the following devices:
- Siemens M20 (Single band)
- Siemens TC35 (Dual band)
- Siemens MC35 (Dual band + GPRS)
- Siemens MC45t (Tri-band + GPRS)
- Nokia 6310, 6310i (for testing only)
- Wavecom Modem 1900
- Wavecom Multiband 900E, 1800
- To add specific device support, contact NCL for a quote and ship device to NCL HQ
NCL recommend Siemens. From our experience, these have been deployed in a wide range of M2M applications and have stood upto continuous high volume messaging throughput.
